What is Biomimetic Dentistry?

If you aren’t familiar with the term “biomimetic dentistry,” then you aren’t alone. While the practice has been around for many years, it’s only recently become more mainstream. More and more dentists are choosing this approach to dentistry as they learn the benefits for their patients. Dr. Williams and his staff are proud to offer this alternative to traditional dentistry.

What is biomimetic dentistry?

Biomimetic dentistry is a less invasive type of dentistry. Its primary goal is to conserve the integrity and structure of the natural tooth. Biomimetic loosely translates to “life-like” or “mimicking nature.” The idea is that sticking as close to the natural thing as possible will yield the most effective and long-term results. Simply put, it operates under a “less is more” mentality with a more natural and seemingly organic approach. Biomimetic dentistry helps seal damaged teeth in such a way that protects them from infection, thus negating any future need for crowns or other invasive dental work.

How does it differ from traditional dentistry?

Traditional dentistry, while effective and necessary in many circumstances, tends to be more invasive. The treatment plans are often more aggressive and require dentists to compromise the natural teeth significantly more. Quite frequently, the end result is extraction. In contrast, when necessary, a biomimetic approach will only remove the compromised parts of a tooth.

Additionally, while traditional dentistry focuses more on each individual symptom and solving dental issues in the short-term, biomimetic dentistry is more holistic, focusing on the long-term dental health of the patient.
