Healthy Gums = Healthy Body

Gum disease can be similar to high blood pressure, diabetes, or high cholesterol, in the sense that you may not know you have it until you are professionally checked for it. And since the American Dental Association estimates that 8 out of 10 adults will have some form of gum disease at some point in their lives, regular periodontal screenings are critical!

Why is Periodontal Treatment so Critical?

The bacteria that can build up on your teeth are in an area made up of mucous membranes. That means they can easily find their way into your bloodstream. Once in your body, they weaken your immune system and have been connected to a major list of health problems including:

  • Stroke
  • Heart Disease
  • Cancers including Pancreatic, Kidney and Tongue Cancer
  • Lung Cancer
  • Lung Disease
  • Diabetes
  • Osteoporosis
  • Premature Childbirth

What Happens If I Have Periodontal Disease?

A dentist uses a high-tech soft tissue laser on a patient, promoting the gentle removal of damaged or diseased gum tissue through advanced periodontal therapy.

If we find that you have some level of periodontal disease, don’t worry. As scary as it all sounds, gum disease is relatively easy to treat. We start by clearing away all of the buildup and bacteria under your gums. We use high-tech soft tissue lasers to gently remove any damaged or diseased gum tissue and kill any bacteria below the gum line.

Once we have thoroughly cleaned your gums, we follow up with a topical antibiotic treatment. The antibiotic we use most frequently for efficiency and effectiveness is Arestin. Arestin kills bacteria under the gum line with microspheres that stay in place for up to 21 days. Sometimes we prescribe an oral antibiotic to fight systemic infections that have resulted from gum disease. Continued home care and frequent checkups are also vital. Together, we can stop gum disease and keep you healthy for life.
